Wonder Woman kept a close eye on the scene at the Gold Coast Neighborhood Association’s 35th annual Astor Street Block Party. Towering above the crowd, Wonder Woman made sure that peace and order reigned supreme throughout the evening.
Wonder Woman was the star of the Junior League of Chicago’s table scheme at the event. The installation was designed by Stanley Smith of Oak Street Design. This was Smith’s sixth consecutive year of designing the JLC’s vision for the block party. The evening ran without a hitch, aside from some lingering clouds that threatened — but never delivered — inclement weather. Did Wonder Woman perhaps play a role in that as well?
Dubbed “The World’s Most Elegant Block Party,” the event did not disappoint. A live band kept the atmosphere light and festive with an array of classic and pop hits. Several food trucks, like Da Lobsta and Bruges Waffles & Frites, also tempted visitors with delectable offerings.
Highly-decorative, themed tables amped up the party atmosphere at the annual community gathering. It was a pure delight to take a loop around the block and see the time and attention to detail participants put into their respective tables. Several local restaurants and businesses participated with their own tables, including Nico Osterio and Red Head Piano Bar. A table transformed into a black car stood out from the crowd as its patrons dressed in flapper and gangster garb.
A bit of competition was in the air as judges voted on the artistry of the table designs based on a variety of categories. The JLC’s Wonder Woman took home the “Most Creative Prize”. By evening’s end everyone had a lovely time and was perfectly safe — and for that we have Wonder Woman to thank.
